Joseph Tarrant

Hey y'all! My name is Joseph Tarrant and I am a sophomore Math-Economics major from Terre Haute, Indiana. I spend my time, when I am not in class or at work, hanging out with friends, debating theological and philosophical questions, playing basketball, or reading pretty much anything I can get my hands on. My favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy but I also enjoy historical fiction, biographies, and basically anything else.

I chose to participate in this MayX because I find cryptology really interesting and this setting for it seemed especially intriguing. I love the mathematical side of cryptology, who doesn't love to solve confusing math puzzles, but I also really like the historical aspect of how cryptology has affected world events. This program seemed to offer some insight into both sides, with emphasis on the mathematical construction and decryption of ciphers and codes but also some consideration of the way that historical ciphers, the Enigma specifically, have changed world history. I am excited to see these two disparate sides of this subject blended together and to see the places where these historical events took place.

I can't wait to see some of the sights in London, both those connected with the course and extracurricular sights. I am looking forward to visiting Bletchley Park for the reasons alluded to above, I want to see where the Enigma decryption actually happened. I am also excited to visit Cambridge because I have heard so much about the university from friends who have visited and in literature I have read and I look forward to actually seeing it and making visual connections to the things I have heard. Diverting from the emphasis of the course, I am also really looking forward to visiting the Globe Theater as I grew up reading Shakespeare plays. I can't wait to see where those plays were originally performed and to participate in the history associated with that.
